How to make a moodboard online

Five steps, a couple of minutes, no account.

  1. Add your images and GIFs

Drag JPEGs, PNGs, WebPs and GIFs onto the board, choose them from your computer, or paste one straight in with Cmd or Ctrl and V. Up to 40 images, 25 MB each.

  2. Pick a layout

Eight to choose from: Collage, Grid, Columns, Hero, Feature, Filmstrip, Panels, or one picture per slide for a lookbook. Shuffle until it looks right.

  3. Shape the deck

Put the pictures in order and cut them into slides with the scissors or a set number per slide.

  4. Set the look and the words

Pick a background and the spacing. Drag any cropped picture to choose what stays in frame.

  5. Export it

Download a .pptx for PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides or Canva, a PDF, or 1920 x 1080 PNGs. Everything is made on your computer.

What makes a good moodboard

A moodboard is an argument made of pictures. It should let someone who wasn't in the room say what the film, shoot or campaign will feel like, in one look. These are the rules we work to.

Per board

One idea

A board answers one question: how it feels, how it's lit, what people wear. Three questions want three boards.

Images

8 to 20

Fewer than eight and it reads as a few nice pictures. More than twenty and nobody can say what it's about.

Image

One hero

Pick the frame that says it best and give it room. Hero and Feature exist for exactly this.

Edit hard

No strays

If you have to explain why an image is there, it probably shouldn't be. Cut it and the rest get louder.

Motion counts too. A two second GIF of a camera move says more than any still of it, which is why GIFs keep playing on this board and in the deck. For the long version, read how to make a moodboard for a video project and how to create a video moodboard.

How to present it

Learned in a lot of pitch rooms, some of them good.

  • Say the idea before you show the board. One sentence, then the slide. People look for what you told them to look for.

  • Then talk through two or three frames, not all of them. Point at the hero and one detail. The rest of the board does its work in the background.

  • Present in slideshow mode if there are GIFs. PowerPoint and Keynote only play them when presenting, which catches everyone out at least once.

  • Send the PDF afterwards. It opens on any phone and it's small. Keep the .pptx for whoever builds the next deck.

Exporting to each app

One .pptx covers PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides and Canva. There's a guide to building a moodboard in Google Slides if you'd rather finish it there.

PowerPoint
Open the .pptx and every slide is there, with each image a separate picture you can nudge or swap. GIFs sit still while you edit and move in Slide Show.
Keynote
In Keynote choose File, then Open, and pick the .pptx. Crops are cut into the images themselves, because Keynote tends to stretch a picture when it's left to crop one on its own.
Google Slides
Choose File, then Import slides, then the Upload tab, and pick the .pptx you just saved. Or upload the .pptx to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides.
Canva
Drag the .pptx on to the Canva homepage, or press Upload there. It becomes a presentation design you can keep editing.
PDF
For sending and printing. One 16:9 page per slide, GIFs shown as their first frame.
PNG
A 1920 x 1080 image for Slack, Notion, Miro or an email, or a .zip with one per slide. Also stills.

The limits

It all runs in your browser, which is why it's private and free, and also why it has edges.

Images
Up to 40 per board, 25 MB each. JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF.
Not accepted
HEIC, AVIF and SVG. Save them as JPEG or PNG first.
Format
16:9 slides, as many as the pictures need, all in one deck. The fonts are Helvetica Neue and Georgia; PowerPoint for Windows swaps in Arial for the first.
Cropping
Most layouts trim edges to fill each frame; drag a picture to choose what stays in, or pick Show whole to trim nothing. Collage and Columns keep each picture's shape.
Big GIFs
A GIF that needs trimming is re-encoded frame by frame. Very long or very large ones keep their full frame and ask the app to crop them, which PowerPoint does and Keynote may not.
Saving
Nothing is stored. Refresh the page and the board starts again, so export first.

Moodboard maker questions

Is this moodboard maker really free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no trial and no premium layouts. It runs in your browser, so it costs us next to nothing to keep it that way.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The images stay in this tab and the files are built on your own computer, so nothing is sent to Spark or anyone else. Close the tab and the board is gone, so export before you leave.

How do I get my moodboard into Google Slides?

Press Google Slides to download a .pptx, open a presentation in Google Slides and choose File, then Import slides, then Upload. Or upload the file to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides. Our guide to making a moodboard in Google Slides covers the rest.

Do GIFs keep moving when I export?

In the .pptx, yes: each GIF is embedded as a GIF. PowerPoint and Keynote show it still while you edit and play it when you present, and the deck carries a note saying so. A PDF or PNG can't animate, so GIFs appear as their first frame.

Can I make a moodboard in Canva with this?

Yes. Press Canva to download the .pptx, then drag it on to the Canva homepage or use the Upload button there, and Canva turns it into a design you can edit. Our guide to making a moodboard in Canva goes further.

What's the difference between the layouts?

Collage and Columns keep each picture's shape, trimming only a sliver so the board fills the slide. Grid, Hero, Feature, Filmstrip and Panels fit pictures to their frames by trimming the edges, the way a picture framer would, and you can drag one to choose what stays in. Pick Show whole and nothing is trimmed at all. Nothing is ever stretched.

Can I put video clips on the board?

Not as video, but a GIF works well. Turn a clip into one with our free video to GIF converter, then drop it on the board.
